5k Trainig: Day Two

I honestly considered giving up today.  It is really hard to run.  I started out okay, but I knew I was asking more of myself.  Each day I run it will be a little further.   Today, I only added one more interval yet I felt overwhelmed.  I barely finished, completely out of breath and drained.  With each pounding of my foot against the pavement I felt myself slow.  I was certain I hadn't run nearly as fast as I had on Monday.  I was a snail pushing myself slowly up an impossible hill.  I arrived home feeling defeated, I was done and I had only started.  Now before anyone gets to worried, I am NOT giving up.  I simply felt that way.  That, however, was before I looked at my times for the day.  Are you ready for this?  Here are my intervals for my 12 min. run/walk:

IntervalsPace (min/mi)Elevation (ft)
5:00 (warmup)16:301
1:00 (fast)11:271
1:00 (slow)15:48-1
1:00 (fast)12:120
1:00 (slow)16:43-1
1:00 (fast)11:44-1
1:00 (slow)16:420
1:00 (fast)14:11-1
1:00 (slow)20:571
1:00 (fast)11:032
1:00 (slow)16:47-0
1:00 (fast)14:14-0
1:00 (slow)17:142
5:00 (cooldown)19:51-2
I was SHOCKED! Three of my intervals were the best I had ever run. I was no snail. Notice the two intervals above 14? Both of those were when I was convinced I wasn't going to make it, that I wasn't cut out to be a runner.  I love to see that when I really focus and think positively I can run pretty well.  11:03 just makes me grin.  I know it's only one minute, but for that one minute I moved the fastest I had in my life.  If I can just keep my head, all my intervals will be that fast.  I LOVE it!

5k Trainig: Day One

I did it.  I made it through my first day of training.  Of course, I've already done this run, but it was almost a month ago.  I'm not sure how much I've improved, or if at all, but I'm going to keep going.  It started off with a good five minute warm-up, 15:50 pace, and then came the first interval.  Running is....hard.  My legs were already on fire, my heart pounding and I was just starting.  I thought over and over again how hard it was.  The more I thought about it, the harder it became.  My mind stronger than my body, I began to slow.  Then I remembered to listen to the music beating in my ears.  Don't think, just move.  Follow the beat, one foot in front of the other.  Each time I did this, my pace picked up.  Just as I would get comfortable, the doubts crowded back in and pain would take over.  It took great effort to push it off, harder each time.  Tomorrow I need to clear my mind more.  It's just movement.  We were built to do it, so go out and do it.

FYI

Did you know there is a Disney Princess Half Marathon?  I didn't.
picture from the Half marathon website
Apparently, Disney World holds this annually, the marathon is through the park starting and ending at Epcot. It's not just the half marathon though, the weekend has a 5k and a kids run as well.  My original plan for my half-marathon race was the Top of Utah, but perhaps I may change?  If I can get the money, and the time.....maybe for a future race, but definitely one I want to run someday.
